About Us

CONTROLLED AUTOMATION, INC. was established in 1986 and is a manufacturer of machinery and handling equipment for the steel fabricating industry. Controlled Automation product list consists of over 30+ different machines for cutting, punching, drilling and conveying structural steel and plate. In addition to new machinery, Controlled Automation has one of the largest rebuild and retrofit shops in the country and offers control packages for most Angle Lines, Beam Lines, Drill Lines and Plate production machines. Controlled Automation is a single source company for service, electronics, software and machine and systems design.

Controlled Automation started as a control retrofit company for machinery that was being used to produce structural steel components for buildings, bridges, communication towers and many other applications. These machines were designed to punch or drill holes for bolted connections and in some cases cut the steel to length. The machines ranged from 20 years old to 5 years old and were originally designed for manual control or some early generation of automation. Controlled Automation developed software that used an off the shelf PC, which could be programmed on the job site to convert the machine to an automated three axis positioning and punching machine.

As Controlled Automation approaches its 38th year of business, remanufactured and retrofit machines are still an important part of the business. They offer the customer a less expensive alternative to new machines.

In 1987 Controlled Automation designed and manufactured it’s first new machine. The experience gained through re-manufacturing allowed for the introduction of a very successful product. The machine processed larger material than any competitive machine and was the first PC based machine on the market for processing angle and flat bar. This machine was followed by a steady stream of new machinery dedicated to punching, cutting, drilling and conveying steel for the steel fabricating industry.

Controlled Automation purchased land and began construction on it’s first manufacturing facility in 1989. Construction projects have been a way of life ever since. What began with a 7200 square foot 10 ton crane capacity manufacturing building and a 3500 square foot office, is now a 30,800 square foot manufacturing complex with the main building having 20 ton crane capacity. We also have a leased facility of approximately 20,000 square feet of manufacturing and a leased office building for software development. The main manufacturing and office building is located in a growing area within a 15 minute drive of Little Rock, National Airport.

In September of 1990 Apex Machining Inc. was incorporated. The primary function of this company was to provide machine parts for Controlled Automation. Apex Machining also provides job shop machining for industrial customers on a contract basis. Apex is located on the same property as Controlled Automation and utilizes a 20,000 square foot building with attached offices. Modern automated machining equipment and a high degree of quality at Apex helps to make Controlled Automation very competitive.

Controlled Automation is a customer-driven company specializing in the design and manufacture of superior fabricating equipment. Our mission, as a team, is to strengthen and grow through the success of our customers while offering them constant respect, gratitude, and a quality product.
