PUNCH CYCLE

The punch cylinders are extended and retracted by hydraulic oil. The hydraulic valves that control the punch extend/retract direction are double solenoid (1 for extend and 1 for retract) and operate at 115VAC 60Hz. There are two limit switches for each punch cylinder. The limit switches are +15VDC inputs and are wired using the normally open contacts. One is made (turned on) when the punch cylinder is fully retracted (RETRACT LIMIT SWITCH), the other is made when the punch cylinder is fully extended (EXTEND LIMIT SWITCH).

When the machine initializes at the beginning of a run, all of the punch cylinders are retracted to the fully retract position (retract limit switch on). During a punch cycle, the punch extend valve and the pressure valve(s) are turned on by the computer. As the punch is extending, the computer is waiting for the extend limit switch to make. When the extend limit switch is made, the computer turns off the extend valve and the pressure valve(s). After a short delay to let the hydraulic line pressure drop, the punch retract valve and the same pressure valve(s) are turned on. The computer now waits for the retract limit switch to make. When the retract limit switch is made, the retract valve and the pressure valve(s) are turned off, and the punch cycle is complete.

With the gag punch frames, prior to the punch cycle, the proper gag (punch) must be selected. An air valve (gag clear) on the gag punch frame is used as a lubricator for the internal slides of the gag blocks. This air valve operates momentarily every time a different gag is selected. In addition, there is a separate air valve and cylinder for each gag on the frame, typically two. On each gag cylinder there is an extend and retract reed switch. The retract reed switch is on when the gag cylinder is fully retracted (gag punch not selected). The extend reed switch is on when the gag cylinder is fully extended. (gag punch selected).

When a gag punch is selected, the respective gag air valve is turned on and the cylinder is extended (retract reed switch off and extend reed switch on). The selected gag cylinder must be fully extended and the other gag cylinder(s) must be fully retracted. When all the gag cylinders are in the proper position, the punch cycle will proceed. If a gag cylinder is not fully extended or not fully retracted, neither the extend nor the retract reed switch will be on for that gag cylinder, and the computer will halt and display a GAG ERROR. If any of the gag cylinders are not in the correct fully extended or fully retracted position (correct reed switches on), the computer will halt and display a GAG ERROR.

COMMON PROBLEMS - STANDARD PUNCH FRAMES

Limit switches bad or not adjusted correctly.

Hydraulic valves bad or not operating correctly.

Hydraulic pressure not set correctly.

COMMON PROBLEMS - GAG PUNCH FRAMES

Reed switches bad or not mounted correctly.

Gag air valves not operating correctly.

Gag air cylinders not fully extending or retracting.

Computer not allowing enough time for gag cylinders to fully extend and retract.
